4 singers for church choir in stonningtonSing easy Traditional Music with our Church Choir

Stonnington Community Uniting Church has a small choir and we would like to recruit occasional choir members to swell our ranks. Our beautiful church is a lovely place to sing, and the choir sings one Sunday per month plus at our Christmas Carol Service under the guidance of organist and choirmaster Colin Jenkins.

We are recruiting singers for our little choir!

Singing in a Church Choir

Singing in a Church Choir is a great way to make new friends who instantly have something in common- the love of music. The feeling of release you get when you sing music that you have known for decades and the feeling of achievement when you take on a new piece of music is particularly special with a traditional church choir repertoire. The feel good, the opportunity to express a composer’s sentiment, the joy, it all becomes tangible.

Our Church Choir is part of Sunday Service once a month. It joins the congregation for communal hymns, but generally is seated in bespoke seating adjacent to the organ and choirmaster. Thankfully there is no need to hold up heavy music, the music stands that have served for 100 years do that job very well.

Music selection by Colin JenkinsChoir stalls and organ pipes for church choir

Colin Jenkins is our wonderful organist and choirmaster. A quick internet search reveals that Colin has played every great organ in Melbourne and that of course includes our organ built by George Fincham & Sons. There is so much more to learn about this man but that will be for another day!

Colin comes to the church one Sunday a month, and consequently the choir sings only once a month. The music Colin selects is mostly from the traditional church choir repertoire, and is easy to sing.

Rehearsals and Performances

The commitment for singers is minimal for the standard monthly performances at Sunday Service. Colin circulates the score and a recording in advance for singers to familiarise with the music. Rehearsal is at 9.30 am on Sunday morning, they practise for 30 minutes or so, and sing from 10.30.

More time is required from September when we start preparing for the Carol Service in December, but still no rehearsals during the week.

Singer Selection Criteria

We would like to recruit occasional choir members to swell our ranks. We would love to be able to fill our choir stalls and lift the roof off the church, however we are a small choir with a big heart and you are welcome.

  • There is no need to be a church member.
  • It will preferable if you can read music, but it is not mandatory.
  • All ages
  • Gender inclusive
  • No audition, but we are a small choir, so you can’t really hide in the back row
  • If you love to sing, we have a spot for you.
