The Words He SpokeStars over the horizon

I did not know that the stars were the words He spoke to me,
and so I did not hear their cry of praise.
I saw only distant lights scattered across the night,
not the wonder that called my soul awake.

I did not know that my mother’s embrace
was the way Divine Love first gathered me,
and so I did not recognise
the tenderness holding all things together.

I did not know that the butterfly
was a whisper of resurrection,
and so I did not trust
that endings can become beginnings.

I did not know that the river
was teaching the wisdom of surrender,
and so I fought the current,
afraid to be carried by grace.

I did not know that the forest
was a hymn of belonging,
and so I imagined myself alone,
separate from the living world.

I did not know that birdsong
was creation practising joy,
and so I hurried through the morning
without hearing heaven sing.

I did not know that friendship
was God’s longing for communion,
and so I passed by so many

opportunities to know and be known

I did not know that beauty
was the face of the Holy peering through matter,
and so I passed by a thousand revelations
without lifting my eyes.

I did not know that consciousness
was the universe opening its eyes,
and so I never wondered
who it was that looked back at me

I did not know that compassion
was evolution discovering love,
and so I failed to see
the future toward which Spirit calls us.

I did not know that Christ
was the universe remembering its source,
the Word made flesh,
the song becoming singer.

And so I searched for God in distant places,

in religious texts
in hidden heavens,
in mysteries beyond the world.

Only slowly did I learn:

That the universe was her voice calling

And everywhere,
through a thousand Words,
a single Presence whispered:

“Only look and someday you will see”
