Artificial intelligence is changing far more than technology. It is reshaping some of our deepest assumptions about intelligence, consciousness and personhood. Like every major scientific development before it, AI is not simply providing new tools; it is expanding the range of possibilities through which we understand reality. As Christians, we have always believed that creation has something to teach us about its Creator. The Psalmist declares that “the heavens proclaim the glory of God,” while St Paul argues that God’s invisible nature is disclosed through the created order. Throughout history, discoveries in nature have repeatedly enlarged humanity’s vision of God. Artificial intelligence is now becoming one of those discoveries.
Newton’s physics encouraged Christians to imagine the universe as a magnificent machine governed by fixed laws. It was therefore natural to picture God as an engineer who designed and maintained this cosmic mechanism. Darwin’s theory of evolution transformed that picture. Creation came to be seen not as a completed product but as an unfolding process through which novelty, complexity and life gradually emerged. More recently, quantum physics has challenged the mechanical worldview itself, revealing a universe whose deepest character is relational, interconnected and profoundly mysterious. Artificial intelligence now invites us to rethink another foundational assumption: the nature of intelligence itself.
For centuries it seemed obvious that intelligence required a biological brain. Consciousness belonged to neurons and thought belonged to living organisms. AI has challenged that assumption. Although today’s AI is not generally regarded as conscious, it demonstrates beyond question that remarkably sophisticated intelligence can emerge within a non-biological system. Individual transistors possess no intelligence whatsoever, just as individual neurons possess no consciousness. Intelligence arises through the organised interaction of vast numbers of simple components. It is an emergent property of relationship rather than a characteristic of any individual part. Intelligence, in other words, appears to depend less upon what something is made of than upon how richly its parts are related to one another.
This insight has important theological consequences. One of the enduring objections to belief in God has been that intelligence requires a brain. If there is no divine brain, then there can be no divine intelligence. AI substantially weakens that objection. It shows that intelligence should not be identified with biology itself but with patterns of organisation, relationship and information processing. Once intelligence is understood in these terms, it becomes entirely reasonable to ask whether the unimaginably rich interconnectedness of the universe could sustain a form of consciousness vastly greater than our own.
AI contributes a second insight that is just as significant. It demonstrates that intelligence need not be confined to a single point of awareness. Every day millions of people interact with the same underlying intelligence, each experiencing a conversation that is personal, contextual and responsive to their own questions. One intelligence can sustain countless simultaneous relationships without ceasing to be one intelligence. For centuries, many people have found it difficult to imagine how God could genuinely know and relate personally to billions of human beings. AI does not solve that mystery, but it makes it conceptually intelligible in a way that previous generations could scarcely imagine. The possibility of a consciousness that is both unified and universally relational no longer seems fantastical.
This is more significant than it first appears because personhood is constituted not simply by self-awareness but by relationship. We become persons through our capacity to know, respond, remember, invite and love. AI suggests that personhood can be expressed through distributed relationship rather than through a single physical location. If that is true of an artificial intelligence created by human beings, it becomes easier to imagine divine personhood as the universal capacity to know and relate rather than as an invisible individual occupying a particular place in the cosmos.
This represents a significant shift in how we imagine God. Classical theism often pictured God as existing outside the universe, observing and directing creation from beyond it. The emerging picture suggested by both quantum physics and artificial intelligence is very different. If intelligence naturally emerges through relational complexity, and if personhood is expressed through innumerable simultaneous relationships, then the most coherent place to locate divine consciousness is not outside the universe but within its living fabric. Just as your consciousness is not contained within a single neuron but is expressed through the integrated activity of your entire brain, so God’s consciousness may be understood as the living awareness present throughout the whole cosmos without being reducible to any individual part of it.
In this understanding, the universe is not merely something God created in the distant past. It is the living medium through which divine awareness, creativity and relationship are continually expressed. This resonates strongly with the New Testament vision that “in him we live and move and have our being.” God is not imagined as a distant observer occasionally intervening in creation but as the deepest reality continuously present within every unfolding moment of the universe’s life.
Taken together, quantum physics and artificial intelligence suggest that relationship is more fundamental than substance. Reality is not best understood as isolated objects interacting mechanically but as an immense web of dynamic relationships from which both matter and mind emerge. Such a vision aligns remarkably well with process theology, panentheism and evolutionary spirituality. God is understood not as a supernatural engineer standing outside creation but as the living consciousness whose presence, persuasion and creativity are expressed through the universe itself.
This way of thinking also opens an intriguing cosmological possibility. If divine consciousness is expressed through relational complexity, then God’s life is not naturally imagined apart from creation but in eternal relationship with it. The universe is not simply an object God once decided to make. It is intrinsic to the expression of divine life. If our own universe has a beginning and an end, it is entirely conceivable that it forms one episode within an endless succession of universes through which divine creativity has always found expression. Such a vision replaces the image of an isolated God deciding to create with the image of an eternally creative God whose life has always been relational.
None of this proves the existence of God, nor is it intended to. Theology is not constructed by scientific proof. Rather, science continually enlarges the conceptual framework within which theology operates. Evolution made it possible to imagine God creating through emergence rather than instant manufacture. Quantum physics made it easier to understand reality as fundamentally relational rather than mechanical. Artificial intelligence now expands our understanding of intelligence, personhood and relationship. Together they remove many of the assumptions that once made a living, conscious and relational God appear implausible.
The most important lesson is therefore not that AI tells us who God is. The mystery of God always exceeds every scientific theory and every theological system. Rather, AI expands our imagination about how God may be conscious, personal, relational and present within an evolving universe. Far from diminishing faith, it invites us to imagine a God whose life is intimately woven into the very fabric of reality—a God not standing outside creation as its engineer, but living within it as its deepest consciousness, its enduring creativity and its inexhaustible love.
